Family Camping

Family Camping

Rockwood Conservation Area

3 Days Beginner

What To Expect

Pack up the car and leave the city behind for three days of adventure at Rockwood Conservation Area. This trip is designed for families who want their kids to experience the simple joys of outdoor living: learning to build a fire, pitching a tent together, and discovering what happens when screens are replaced with stargazing.

Your days will be filled with exploration. Kids can try their hand at canoeing on calm waters or learn the patience required for fishing (both activities are optional and based on interest). Between activities, there's plenty of time for wandering trails, spotting wildlife, and letting curiosity lead the way. Evenings gather everyone around the campfire for stories, marshmallows, and the kind of conversations that only happen when the world slows down.

This isn't about perfection. It's about kids contributing to camp chores, solving problems as a group, and building confidence through hands-on experiences. Parents get to step back and watch their children grow a little more self-sufficient while reconnecting as a family away from the demands of everyday life.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Day one begins with arrival and camp setup. Once tents are pitched and gear is organized, families head out for a guided nature walk to get oriented with the area. The afternoon is open for swimming or exploring on your own. Dinner is cooked together at the campsite, followed by an evening campfire and introduction to the weekend ahead.

Day 2

Day two starts with breakfast and morning camp duties where kids take on age-appropriate responsibilities. Mid-morning offers optional canoeing lessons on the conservation area's protected waters, perfect for beginners. Those not canoeing can join a fishing workshop or continue exploring trails. Lunch is a picnic affair, and the afternoon is unstructured time for swimming, reading, napping, or whatever calls to each family. The evening brings a group cookout, games, and campfire songs.

Day 3

Day three wraps up the adventure. After breakfast and breaking down camp together, there's time for one last activity before departure. Families leave with muddy boots, tired smiles, and stories that will last far longer than the weekend.
