Trip Details

Algonquin Provincial Park

Algonquin Park is home to many unique ecosystems, including a convergence of Boreal and Great Lakes St. Lawrence habitats. On this trip, we’ll focus on the vascular plants - a diverse biological taxa, with each species having unique preferences for growing conditions and habitat. A recent study has confirmed over 1000 species of vascular plants in Algonquin, with several hundred more non-native or invasive species. Learning these species and their preferred habitats is one of the best ways to understand the ecology, geology and natural history of any landscape. Join us with local Algonquin area Botanist Ryan Morin, as he provides an introduction to the vascular plants of the region by canoe and portage trail.

Learn how to deepen your understanding of landscape and natural history of Algonquin Provincial Park through:

  • Introduction to the identification of the Trees, Shrubs, Forbs, Ferns, Grasses, Sedges and Rushes of Algonquin Park.
  • Learn about wetlands and the difference between a Fen, Bog, Swamp and Marsh.
  • Learn about the different forest types found in Algonquin Park, by looking from the canopy down to the forest floor.
  • Learn the difference between native and non-native species, the importance of monitoring invasive species and the health of native ecological communities.
  • Pass through the largest remaining stand of Old Growth White Pine in Central Ontario.**
  • Visit a stand of one of Ontario’s rarest ferns, that calls Algonquin Park home.
  • Increase your understanding of the unique ecological conditions of the Algonquin dome and its natural history.
  • Observe and identify wetland and lakeshore plant species from canoe.
  • Try and stump Ryan on a plant identification by pointing out difficult specimens.
  • Learn how to use the most popular citizen science app, iNaturalist, to continue to catalogue, identify and share your own discoveries.

As a group, we will compile a list of all the vascular plants observed on this trip, and Ryan will provide an excel sheet checklist in the following weeks to all participants. This information will also be shared with Ontario Park’s Ecologists to improve knowledge of the plants of Algonquin Provincial Park.

*Note that Algonquin Park limits the number of campers on their backcountry sites to 9 people. This typically results in our trips have 7-8 spots open for guests while accounting for 1-2 guides.

** Subject to accessibility. The access road may be washed out or impassible at times. If so, an alternate route will be used.
